The Differences: Pavers vs. Mats

Stability and Movement

Interlocking rubber pavers lock together at every seam, creating a surface that holds its position under pawing, rolling, and equipment traffic. Rubber mats sit on the floor without mechanical fastening, they can shift, develop gaps, and curl at edges over time, especially in stalls with active horses.

Drainage

The interlocking design of rubber pavers allows water and urine to drain between tiles and off the floor surface, which is particularly important in wash racks and high-moisture stall environments. Rubber mats sit flat against the subfloor, moisture can pool on top or collect underneath if the subfloor isn't perfectly level and drained.

Aesthetics

Pavers are available in six colors and create the look of a finished, professional facility, similar to the aesthetic of quality brick or cobblestone. Rubber mats have a functional appearance that works well in stalls but doesn't carry the same visual impact in barn aisles or other visible areas of the facility.

Installation

Thinner Equi-Pavers (5/8" to 1") are installed with adhesive over cured concrete, see our rubber paver installation guide for full specs. Thicker pavers (1-5/8" and 1-3/4") can be dry-set over a compacted base without adhesive, making them suitable for barns without concrete subfloors. Rubber mat kits are precut and drop into place without adhesive, which makes them faster to install in a standard 12x12 stall.

Longevity

Well-installed rubber pavers are built for 10 to 20 years of service indoors and 5 to 15 years in outdoor applications. Their color runs through the full depth of the paver, so wear doesn't change the appearance. Rubber mats have a good lifespan but are more susceptible to edge lifting and surface compression in high-traffic zones over time.

Cost Over Time

Rubber pavers cost more per square foot upfront than mat kits for equivalent areas. But when you factor in longevity, drainage performance, and the reduced maintenance associated with a stable, interlocked surface, pavers typically deliver stronger long-term value for high-traffic and high-visibility areas.
